5 Ways to Prepare Your HVAC System for Fall

|

Like any appliance or tool, your HVAC system needs to be checked regularly to ensure it’s working efficiently and won’t break down when you least expect it. The fall is the perfect time to run through our checklist of ways to prep your system for cooler days. Take this time to clean the unit itself and also better protect your home and family from dirt buildup and potential poor air quality.

1. Clear debris from the unit

For those with outdoor HVAC units, fall is the perfect time to take a moment to clean grass, leaves, and other debris out of the system. It is no surprise that HVAC systems can begin to work less efficiently and can even break due to lodged in sticks, decomposing dirt, and more.

2. Inspect the thermometer

If your HVAC system has a programmable thermostat, now is the perfect time to make the needed adjustments to stay comfortable as the outdoor temperatures begin to cool down. Adjusting your thermostat accordingly to your local climate will keep your HVAC unit from working harder than it needs to. This can also save you money on your heating and cooling bills, which we can’t complain about.

3. Deep clean your home

Dirt, dust, and allergens are all picked up by your HVAC system and effectively pumped back into your air. The redistribution of dirt and dust can cause flare-ups in allergies and can even trigger asthma attacks. While the goal is to always keep your home free of dust and allergens, fall is a great time to perform a deep clean of your home. Doing so will minimize the amount of dirt, dust, and debris that gets cycled through your HVAC system during the winter.

4. Change out your air filters

If it has been a few months since you last changed your HVAC filter, we recommend you get into the habit of changing the filters out each new season. New, clean filters are especially important if you have people with breathing conditions or allergies that live in your home. This simple swap is the easiest way to ensure your HVAC equipment functions accurately and efficiently during the upcoming winter months.

5. Schedule your HVAC maintenance check

Finally, scheduling an HVAC expert to perform a fall maintenance tune-up on your HVAC system is suggested. Whether you’ve gone through the first four steps yourself or simply want someone to handle it all for you, an HVAC expert can help prevent future issues with your system. They will also diagnose any current problems and provide other recommendations on ways to keep your system functioning properly. During a seasonal inspection or tune-up, your HVAC professional will ensure that all of your equipment is clean and functioning properly, giving you peace of mind as cooler weather begins to roll in.
